Bikes can come together
in the strangest of ways. Nearly everyone has his own story of how they
put their masterpiece together. Darren Long is no different. Only his circumstances
are a little out of the ordinary. See, Darren was a professional football
player, a tight end with the Los Angeles Express of the United States Football
League.
He was drivirig his cage
down the street one day when he had a blowout. The place he took it to
just happened to be located behind Michael's Motorcycle Works, a shop in
the San Fernando Valley. While waiting for a patch job, Darren moseyed
into the bike establishment for a look see. While checking the scoots he
got into a conversation with the shop owner, Michael. Now Michael didn't
know this guy from Adam, just another potential customer, deserving of
his time. As they rapped, Darren began getting the itch. He laid out his
plans for a ride he'd like, a six over front end, upsweep pipes, lowered
and stretched. A monstrosity. Something like the generic chopper in citizens'
minds. But unlike citizens, Darren was able to hear another side of the
story. Michael deprogrammed him. Representing a more practical version,
explaining the benefits of a rigid, with the wide glide front end, and
a panhead power plant. Something that would putt comfortably, look great
and provide years of ridability.
It's a plan that was
carried out to a T by the quarterback, Michael.
